Directing

The four year course in Theatre Directing encourages young directors to find their own directorial ›signatures‹ in an increasingly complex world. At the heart of the education is a theatrical understanding that the actor’s performance is at the centre of the director’s vision.
The course is structured systematically. In the two year Foundation course we teach the fundaments of the craft of directing through practical exercises, scene studies and theoretical reflection. At the beginning, the directing students join the actor’s foundation course and learn about the fundaments of acting (how to action the text etc), and through their own acting work gain an insight into the creative process of the actor. In the directing courses, we teach the importance of ›situation‹, and train the students in different directorial approaches (V-effect, Scene Transformation etc) and offer workshops on Directing Methodology, which is not purely theoretical, but is put to the test with professional actors. Following the analysis of the directing methods of Bertold Brecht, we turn to late Stansislavski with his emphasis on psycho-physical actioning. The courses in acting and directing methodology (which are always practical) are complemented by Performance Analysis, Dramaturgy and Text Analysis. The aim of analysing the dramatic text is to find the situation of each scene and possible suggestions of the action which is inherent in the text. The plays we examine range from Classical Antiquity to the Post-modern. Further subjects taught on the course are: set design, costumes, light and makeup, theatre history, sociology, physical and vocal training, music theory, verse studies, technical aspects of theatre and methods of rehearsing.
A student can only learn to direct if he practices his craft and if he is also prepared to reflect on his work with his fellow students and colleagues. Up until the intermediate examination following the 4th Semester, each student is given at least four directing projects which are either performed by professional actors or acting students. The projects are a mixture of compulsory texts and projects chosen by the students themselves.
The second part of the degree is structured around two important productions. In the 3rd year, there is a collaborative project with the Acting Faculty, which is performed at the bat-Theatre. The teachers from both faculties make a joint decision with the students on the material and give suggestions for casting. The course draws to its completion in the 4th year with a final production. These projects take place either in the bat-theatre (with professional performances) or in collaboration with a theatre. The study programme is supplemented by individual projects, work experience and directing work at various theatres.
